Family and early life of Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise was born as Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, New York. He lived with his father Thomas Mapother III, an electrical engineer, mother Mary Lee Pfeiffer and three sisters. He was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was seven. As his parents shifted from one house to another on a frequent basis, by the time Cruise was 14, he had attended 15 different schools in both Canada and the US. He did not have a great childhood as his parents divorced when he was 12. He eventually dropped the surname Mapother when his father denied paying for child support. Cruise then enrolled to become a priest at a Franciscan seminary when he was 14. However, he dropped out after a year.
For a short time, Tom Cruise attended St. Xavier High School, Louisville, Kentucky. Simultaneously, he worked as a paperboy for the journal Louisville Courier. Finally, he settled at New Jersey’s Glen Ridge High School. It was actually here that he became interested in acting. Prior to that, he was in the school’s wrestling team but was unable to continue after a major injury in his knee. Cruise played the lead role in Guys and Dolls, the school’s production and it was a big success.

In June 1980, Tom Cruise graduated from Glen Ridge High School. Later, he headed for New York to pursue his career in acting. He studied drama at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre with popular acting coaches Sanford Meisner and Phil Gushee. He also studied acting at the Actors Studio, New School University. Finally, in 1981, by appearing in a small role in Endless Love, he made his film debut. The movie starred Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt in the lead roles. The film gained him immediate notice and soon he appeared in the military drama Taps. Though the movie was an average success, it helped Cruise gain exposure and made him busy for the next couple of years.

After Taps, Tom Cruise starred in two teen movies The Outsiders and Losin’ It released in the year 1983. Then came the crime caper Risky Business opposite Rebecca De Mornay. It was the first lead role he played and the movie was a big blockbuster. From there began his journey of stardom. He was just 5’9” tall and did not have the looks of a movie star, of course in the traditional sense; however, within five years, he played the lead role in a few top grossing movies including Top Gun, The Color of Money, Rainman, Cocktail and Born on the Fourth of July. In the 1990s, Cruise was easily the highest paid actors in the whole world. In fact, he was paid close to 20 million dollars per movie, especially in his blockbuster hits including The Firm, Interview with the Vampire, Mission: Impossible, and Jerry Maguire. His consecutive movies Mission: Impossible 2, Vanilla Sky, Minority Report, The Last Samurai and Collateral also hit the box office each making more than 100 million dollars in the US alone.
In 2005, Cruise starred in the Spielberg’s The War of the Worlds and unsurprisingly, the film was a huge box office success. Later, he played the lead role in Valkyrie, Tropic Thunder, Knight and Day, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise has also produced and co-produced a few movies.
