Mark Zuckerberg is the well known face behind the social networking site Facebook. He was awarded the Times Person of the Year Award in 2010 and is one of the world’s youngest billionaires.
Mark Zuckerberg was born on the 14 of May, 1984 in White Plains, New York. Born into an educated Jew family, his father is a dentist and his mother a psychiatrist. He along with his three siblings grew up in the village of Dobbs Ferry. Zuckerberg was interested in computers from an early age. By the age of twelve, he wrote an Atari BASIC program named Zucknet which was used by his father in his dental clinic. This program was used as information about the arrival of a new patient in the clinic and the information was conveyed to the practicing dentist in the next room. Zuckerberg also used to create computer games along with his friends. Seeing his interest, his parents hired David Newman as a tutor for Mark.
Education and Career Path of Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg studied at Philips Exeter Academy, a preparatory school in New Hampshire. Teachers that taught here remember Mark as a person that excelled in literature. He was also the captain of the school fencing team. Even in those days, Zuckerberg was fascinated by computers and kept on developing new programs that interested him. In high school, he wrote an early version of music software and named it Synapse.
Mark Zuckerberg graduated from Exeter and joined Harvard in 2002. He developed many software programs and by the second year of college days in Harvard, Zuckerberg was well known as a software developer. He wrote programs like CourseMatch and FaceMash. CourseMatch was related to the class selection in relation to the course selected by the candidate. Later on, his fellow students came up with the idea of Harvard Connection which was used by Harvard students for dating purposes. Then, Mark Zuckerberg along with Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin started a social networking site – The Facebook. Until June 2004, Facebook was operated out of a dorm room at Harvard. After his second year at Harvard, Zuckerberg dropped out of college to concentrate upon the site full time. By the end of 2004, there were more than one million users of Facebook. Zuckerberg then moved the company to Palo Alto, California and thus Facebook became full-fledged operational.
Accel partners invested nearly 12.7 million dollars into the network and soon Zuckerberg’s company had access to many colleges and international schools that tripled the membership to more than 5.5 million users by the end of 2005. Even in the initial stages, there were many who were interested in advertising in the popular social media. He had offers from Yahoo! and MTV networks. But, Mark Zuckerberg’s interest was to open up his project to the outside world and to add more features in the existing site which was continuously becoming popular.

Mark Zuckerberg started dating Priscilla Chan he met during the Harvard days. Her parents are Chinese-Vietnamese refugees and she is from Boston. After nine years of dating, the couple got married on May 20th 2012. It was a simple ceremony that was attended by less than hundred guests. It was to be the graduation party thrown open for Priscilla Chan and all the guests were sweetly surprised to witness an ongoing marriage ceremony between Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. Priscilla Chan is a qualified pediatrician.
Mark Zuckerberg – Philanthropy
Ever since Mark Zuckerberg has amassed a huge fortune, he has been involved in many philanthropic causes. In 2010, he donated nearly hundred million dollars to the Newark Public School system to revive it. In December 2010, he signed the “Giving Pledge” promising to give away fifty percent of his total wealth for the cause of charity during his lifetime.
The creators of Harvard Creation namely twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narendra filed a suit against the Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. The dispute was settled in 2008 with the Winklevosses and Divya being accorded 65 million dollars, part in cash and part in Facebook stock. The contention was that the idea of Facebook was stolen from Harvard Creation. This was written as a book by Ben Mezrich. The rights of the book was later sold off to screen writer Aaron Sorkin. The book was later on made into a movie, the much acclaimed “The social Network “that received eight Academy Award nominations.
