Early life of Bill Gates

Bill Gates was born as William Henry Gates III in Seattle, Washington on the 28th of October, 1955. His father, William H. Gates, II was an attorney in Seattle and his mother, Mary Gates, was a schoolteacher and chairwoman of United Way International. Gates has two sisters. They had a comfortable childhood. Initially, he was put in public school. But, he became bored there. So, his family made him attends the exclusive Lakeside School. There, he excelled in science and math. He was also proficient in English and drama. When he was 13, computer programming was his main interest. It was an era of the large mainframe computers.

Bill Gates made good use of this time and developed a tic-tac-toe program. He used the BASIC programming language, one of the earliest computer languages. Thereafter, he built a computer version of his favorite board game ‘Risk’ in which the ultimate goal is dominating the world. At school, he met Paul Allen who had similar interests in computer as him. Gates and Allen along with two other students hacked into a system that belonged to CCC or Computer Center Corporation in order to get free computer time; however, they couldn’t escape from being caught. After a short period of probation, the school allowed them into the computer lab again. They got an offer to fix glitches in CCC’s software. Later, at age 17, Gates and Allen received a payment of $20,000 for Traf-O-Data, a software program that was used to count traffic!

Bill Gates and Microsoft Corporation

In the US House of Representatives, Bill Gates served as a congressional page in early 1973. He scored a grand 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT and gained entry into the Harvard University. However, he spent a lot of time with Paul Allen who was studying at Washington College. Both worked on a particular version of BASIC that was the basis for the first microcomputer (MITS Altair). As Allen had dropped out of college, he started working on computers at Honeywell Corporation. He managed to convince Gates to drop out of Harvard. Consequently, Gates discontinued studies at Harvard and joined Allen in starting a new software company in 1975. The firm was named Micro-Soft which is an abbreviation of microcomputer software. Sooner, it simply became Microsoft. Besides, they moved the company to Bellevue, Washington. With this company, they revolutionized the whole computer industry.

The main goal of the company was to enable people and businesses all over the world to achieve their full potential. Gates believed that there must be a computer in every home and on every office desk. Well, that is a fulfilled dream now! With its well advanced and purchased software, Microsoft made the computers easier to use. Thus, it became a big commercial success. He licensed the MS-DOS computer operating system to IBM and this is where the success of Microsoft took shape. He also planned well about how he would protect the royalties he acquired from the software he created. He made it possible by fighting aggressively against all kinds of software piracy. Eventually, he effectively created the currently existing retail software market. However, this move was a little controversial during that time because it was considered as freedom to share an innovative and advanced product in the newly forming software industry. However, it was Bill Gates’ stand against software piracy that was the main aspect in the great commercial success that the company went on to achieve.

He led the company in the 1980s and 1990s, ultimately creating a personal computing control with Windows. Gradually, Microsoft became a huge international corporation. By 1995, Bill Gates, Chairman, CEO and largest shareholder of the company was the richest man in the world. He retained this title almost every year since then. In 2008, he retired as the CEO of Microsoft but he remains as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. He did so to focus largely on his charity foundation. Even now, many people want Gates to replace Ballmer as CEO. But, he refuses.
